Creating a new prescription

GetClinic supports UK private prescriptions with full BNF drug database integration, dose shortcuts, and pharmacy routing.

How to create a prescription

  1. Click Prescriptions in the left navigation
  2. Click + New Prescription
  3. Search for and select the patient
  4. Type at least 2 characters in the Medication field to search the drug database
  5. Select the drug from the autocomplete dropdown
  6. Fill in dosage, quantity, directions, and repeats
  7. Choose a payment method and pharmacy routing
  8. Click Save as Pending or Sign & Authorise

Drug autocomplete

The medication field searches the GetClinic drug database (351+ BNF-grade drugs). Start typing the drug name and select from the dropdown. Selecting a drug loads its interaction and contraindication data automatically.

Dose shortcuts

In the Directions field, type any of the following abbreviations and press Tab to expand them:

BDTake one tablet twice daily
TDSTake one tablet three times daily
QDSTake one tablet four times daily
PRNTake as required (maximum once in 24 hours)
STATTake immediately as a single dose
OMTake one tablet each morning
ONTake one tablet at night
ACTake 30 minutes before food
PCTake with or after food
SLPlace under the tongue and allow to dissolve

Drug interactions panel

When you select a drug, a safety panel appears on the right showing:

  • 🔴 Major interactions — clinically significant, avoid if possible
  • 🟡 Moderate interactions — use with caution, monitor patient
  • 🟢 Minor interactions — generally safe, be aware
  • Contraindications — conditions where this drug should not be used
  • ⚠️ Warnings — general precautions
⚠️ Important: Drug interaction data is for reference only. It does not replace clinical judgement. You remain fully responsible for prescribing decisions.
