Creating a new prescription
GetClinic supports UK private prescriptions with full BNF drug database integration, dose shortcuts, and pharmacy routing.
How to create a prescription
- Click Prescriptions in the left navigation
- Click + New Prescription
- Search for and select the patient
- Type at least 2 characters in the Medication field to search the drug database
- Select the drug from the autocomplete dropdown
- Fill in dosage, quantity, directions, and repeats
- Choose a payment method and pharmacy routing
- Click Save as Pending or Sign & Authorise
Drug autocomplete
The medication field searches the GetClinic drug database (351+ BNF-grade drugs). Start typing the drug name and select from the dropdown. Selecting a drug loads its interaction and contraindication data automatically.
Dose shortcuts
In the Directions field, type any of the following abbreviations and press Tab to expand them:

| OD | Take one tablet once daily |
| BD | Take one tablet twice daily |
| TDS | Take one tablet three times daily |
| QDS | Take one tablet four times daily |
| PRN | Take as required (maximum once in 24 hours) |
| STAT | Take immediately as a single dose |
| OM | Take one tablet each morning |
| ON | Take one tablet at night |
| AC | Take 30 minutes before food |
| PC | Take with or after food |
| SL | Place under the tongue and allow to dissolve |
Drug interactions panel
When you select a drug, a safety panel appears on the right showing:
- 🔴 Major interactions — clinically significant, avoid if possible
- 🟡 Moderate interactions — use with caution, monitor patient
- 🟢 Minor interactions — generally safe, be aware
- ⛔ Contraindications — conditions where this drug should not be used
- ⚠️ Warnings — general precautions
